Peanut Butter Cereal Treats

Puppy chow, Muddy Buddies, or whatever you want to call this quintessential Christmas treat (that I’m making in spring, because I’m strange like that), is a highly anticipated delicacy during the fall and early winter.  Unless you’re me.  I didn’t know about this stuff until I was an adult, and even then, I didn’t REALLY become familiar with it until just the past few years.  Some of you may be gasping in horror because “how could I have missed out  on all this awesomeness all of these years??”  I’m just deprived, I guess.

Ok, truth:  I am not a huge fan of this stuff.  Now listen, don’t write me off just yet.  I don’t blog about things that taste bad.  So it’s not that it tastes bad, on the contrary.  It’s super tasty.  One reason this stuff isn’t high up on my ‘lovelovelove’ list is because I don’t know how to categorize it.  It’s sorta a snack and sorta dessert.  But it’s cereal, so is it breakfast too?  Since I don’t know how to categorize it, I don’t know when I should eat it.

Another thing about this finger-lickin-good-cereal is its name.  I’m not inclined to eat dog food, or people food that’s been dumped in mud.   See, this stuff just isn’t ‘my thing.’  I know, I’m thinking a little too deep about a classic treat families have been enjoying for yeeeears.  But, I can’t help it, I’m a super deep person like that.  Anyway, even though I have 101 reasons why this isn’t ‘my thing,’ I also have 101 reasons why Sweet Minglers are awesome.  (side note: Sweet Minglers are another name for them (thank you Wikipedia for this useful piece of info) and it’s a name I far prefer the sound of.  So that’s what I’m calling them). I love the versatility of these.  Change up the chocolate, peanut butter and type of cereal you use, go ahead, try something different!  You can use any sort of ‘chocolate’ you want: semi-sweet, milk, dark, white, etc…  And for the peanut butter, you don’t even have to use peanut butter.  You can use nutella, cookie butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, etc… As for the cereal, I used LIFE, but some sort of rice cereal (like Chex) is the original cereal most people use.  Try either, or try a totally different cereal.  Another HUGE check on the ‘pro’ side of these: they don’t require any baking, and they’re ready from start to finish in 5 minutes, tops!  BAM, pure awesomeness!    Let me know what flavor combination you try and how it turns out.  Enjoy!

Peanut Butter Sweet Minglers (A.K.A. Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies)

Peanut Butter Sweet Minglers (A.K.A. Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies)

  • 9 cups of LIFE (about 1 small box worth)
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 sick) butter
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Melt the white chocolate, peanut butter and butter in a small bowl in the microwave. Stir every 30 seconds to make sue it’s all melted.

Pour the cereal on a large baking sheet with edges, then dump the melted peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Mix (I use my hands. It’s messy for my hands, but more effective).

Dump the cereal into a paper grocery bag, dump the powdered sugar on top, roll up the top of the bag and shake it all together.

I like this method because it gets all the cereal coated and I can just toss the bag in the trash when I’m done. Less dishes to clean up!

After you shake it all up, it’s done! So so easy!
